Automotive giant Stellantis is working on a brand-new model for its popular brand, Fiat. Last week, a new trademark was registered in Turin, Italy, through the FCA Marketing Group. Named after a beloved Australian mammal, this new car will be called the Fiat Koala. Likely to be produced at the factory in Kenitra, Morocco, the vehicle is expected to draw inspiration from the brand’s cherished Panda series.
New Move After Grande Panda: Fiat Koala Production Begins
It is noteworthy that the new model is named after a beloved but endangered animal. The Fiat Koala will fundamentally use the same “smart car” platform as the Grande Panda model. While there will be many shared parts between the vehicles, the new model’s exterior bodywork and interior design will be entirely unique. According to industry rumors, pre-production preparations for the Morocco-built vehicle have already begun. Production for other versions of the platform, such as the seven-seater Giga Panda and Fastback models (currently assembled in Kragujevac, Serbia), is also planned for the Kenitra plant.
More details about this new automobile are expected to become clear on May 21. On that date, Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa will announce the group’s highly anticipated new industrial plan in Auburn Hills. Meanwhile, the Fiat brand continues to achieve great success in the market with its existing Panda models. Out of 73,000 vehicle registrations in Italy in the first quarter of the year, more than 21,000 belonged to the Fiat brand.
Sales Success and Global Strategy
The most important model driving sales was the Pandina, with 11,128 units sold. Thanks to the success of this model produced in Pomigliano, 100 new hires were made in the old mechanical section of the Mirafiori facilities for gearbox production. The new Fiat 500 Hybrid produced in Turin reached 3,682 units, while the Grande Panda hit 4,392 units. This high demand is encouraging the company to develop new models for different markets on the Grande Panda smart car platform.
The heart of the restructuring strategy for Stellantis lies in the American market. The company, which lost significant market share during former CEO Tavares’ tenure, is placing great importance on this region. CEO Antonio Filosa heralded the arrival of new models to North America by the end of the year, including the renewed Chrysler Pacifica, Jeep Recon, Ram 1500 SRT TRX, and Ram Power Wagon Diesel.
The company’s current top three priorities have been identified as increasing sales, improving industrial operations, and raising profitability. CEO Filosa states that they are only just beginning to see what they can achieve. Whether a completely new model will be announced for the Mirafiori plant in Italy remains a matter of curiosity. What do you think about these new strategies and upcoming models in the automotive world, and which car do you use in your daily life?
